Technically Luna was supposed to officially deny that Moon was still around. But it seemed dishonest and wrong to lie like that to someone who was coming to her personally like this.
“Just between you and I, Sunset…” Luna told her in a whisper. “Not hear her, per say. But she is still there. It is more like a revolving door. I know she is watching what I watch and I know what she is thinking sometimes and she knows I am watching and what I am thinking sometimes. We…share the same stage.”
“…The mad-doctor says it is no fault of the person whom this happens to. That it develops to help deal with pain.”
“… But what if the pain won’t go away?” Sunset said, looking up at the lunar princess with a pained look. “I know Mom told you about what’s been going on with me, and my life in the human world. But…”
She looked down at the floor, ears folding back timidly. “Ever since my old friends there did what they did, and left me… I can hear her. My own Demon. She’s just… there… whispering things… eeking her way into the blackest parts of my brain…”
She let out a small sniffle and said, “You’re the only one I’ve told this too. I didn’t want mom and Twilight to worry…”
Luna considered this for a moment. The danger of an inner demon– a literal demon was something that needed addressing. But first came Sunset’s mental health.
“Sunset,” Luna told her “I will have to tell you something now about pain and the demons we form to handle it. And I need you to listen closely.”
She lifted her this niece-like mare’s chin.
“She will never go away. Neither will the pain. It only becomes more bearable with time. And we become stronger. Eventually, we become so strong that the pain itself takes a backseat. And the demon, it often is trying to help. It is up to us to keep her on a leash. We cannot allow her to let us make the same mistakes we did in the past. You are strong, Sunset Shimmer. You have come further than you think. Returning here and facing my sister again. That is not the actions of a coward.”
Sunset gave a small sniffle before wrapping her hooves around the princess, whispering “Thank you…”
Letting go, she wiped her eyes with a hoof, saying “You’re right. I shouldn’t let her make me who I am from here on out. My past doesn’t define who I am today.” She gave a small smile, but it soon gave way into a frown as she said, “But… what do I do about her? I know she’s in there. She’s… she’s my own Mr. Hyde. And I don’t know how much long I keep her in. I just wanna be Jekyll, but I’m always fighting Hyde.”
