A New Counselor

All that night David was unable to sleep. He’d interviewed a woman on the phone a few days who sounded eager to work there and he’d be DARNED if he wasn’t gonna give her an AMAZING first day when she arrived. As soon as his alarm went off, the man hopped out of bed with a smile on his face. As quick as a bunny, David dressed up, showered up, brushed his teeth and hair and saluted his camp flag. He had excited bubbles in his belly and he was eager to share his positivity.

When David saw the car approaching, he clapped his hands and danced on his feet in excitement, biting his lower lip before excitedly waving to Sunset as she got closer.

David was able to set up a little spot with a bed in the girl’s cabin where Sunset would be bunking with Gwen. It wasn’t personal, just some pillows and bedsheets for her with her uniform lying on top, “Perfect!” He said, walking out to join her in the mess hall. He figured a little coffee wouldn’t hurt him for the moment.

David went in the mess hall, ruffling the hair of the children who were too tired to swat his hand away before he grabbed a cup of coffee from the corner and took a seat next to the other, “Whatcha think? Met any of my precious kids, yet?” Precious wasn’t exactly an accurate word, but it showed that David loved them like they were his own, “Here! I brought you a list of the camps we offer so you can see what activities you want to work on on your first day!”

Sunset looked over the activity list with a small hum, looking back at David with a sheepish grin. “Oh wow, that’s… a lot of activities. I’m not even sure I’ll be able to figure out what suits me today.” She said with a chuckle, digging into her meal. “How long have you been a counselor here anyways?”

“That’s alright, Sunset! Just pick from the top five or ten, then. No need to rush.” David smiled, taking a seat next to her, “How Long… hm… I guess I was just a regular counselor for about a year and I got promoted to head counselor this year before I took control of the business. Two summers, I suppose.” He grinned brightly, “And I don’t regret a second of it.”

“Really? Judging from the way you act, I’m surprised you didn’t own the camp before this year.” Sunset said, taking a swig of her coffee. She rubbed her eyes tiredly before she gave David a small smile. “Where do you live? Or do you just stay here year round?”

David’s face practically lit right up as he looked at her, “Y-Yeah! I’m-… I’m so glad you agree with me!” This was the tone of a man who hardly ever got agreed with. His grin stretched a little further, hands going to his cheeks and squishing them in as he bounced on his feet.

“A tour! Right! Yes!” He bounded forward, leading her to the mess hall and opening the doors, “This is where the kids eat and we set up indoor crafts! It’s nice and spacious… kind of… and the Quartermaster is cooking breakfast! Hi, Quartermaster!”

“These children will break you, girl.” Said the man, looking straight at Sunset.

“I-… Thank you… sir…” he took Sunset by the hand and gently led her away with an uncomfortable smile on his face.

Sunset smiled as she was tugged along by David but she paused, tugging her hand gently out of David’s. She walked over to the Quartermaster, a smile on her face, but it looked strained and forced now, almost like that of a broken woman. She gently grabbed him by the collar, hissing at him in an almost sinister voice, and did her eye go… black? “I’d like to see them try…” she said, her voice a low whisper.

She let go and walked back over to David, her smile more genuine now. “Sorry about that. Where were we?”

Sunset let out a sigh as she exited the taxi, stretching her arms in the air, her bones giving sharp pops as she breathed a sigh of relief. Giving the driver what she owed, she took a deep breath of air in, taking in the surroundings. Yep. This was definitely better the being in Canterlot. At let there she won’t have to deal with certain issues.

She rolled her eyes to herself walking out of the car with her bag in tow, and couldn’t help but smile as she saw the counselor she had talk to on the phone waving her over. Man, this was happy. “Hi. I… take it you’re David?” She asked.

“And you must be Sunset! What a deeeeelightful name!” David smiled at her, taking her hand in for a good, strong, shake, “I can’t WAIT to show you around before the kids wake up.”

David turned to the mess hall and saluted the flag outside of it, “That’s the flag of Camp Campbell! Mr. Campbell… well… I used to have a lot of swell things to say about him, but I suppose we should skip that for now.” He showed her how his hand was shaped for the salute, “If you’d ever like to honor the camp on your own time, please feel free to! It sure is darned inspiring, huh?” Asked the man as he wooed a tear from his face.

Sunset let out a giggle as she mimicked David’s hand and quickly saluted the Camp Campbell flag, a small grin on her face. “It definitely is. I’ll admit, this is… nice. A lot more beautiful then I thought it would be.” She said.

“So, when does the tour start?”
