Right before Sunset had hit the ground, she felt an old, familiar aura embraced her, one she hadn’t felt since she was a filly. A warmth covered her, and for a split second, she almost did want to leave it. But sadly, she was brought to her feet and felt a gentle hoof on her forehead.
She winced slightly as her old mentor addressed her, the sternness in her voice causing her ears to instinctively fold back as she looked down at the floor in fear. Never in her life had she felt so small as she only gave the smallest of nods.
Celestia looked away for a moment. She and Philomena seemed to exchange looks before she sighed.
She had secretly hoped the day would come that she could reunite with Sunset. But she had also thought it might be something of a fantasy.
It was difficult to remain stern with her but she had to hold her ground for now.
“Very well. Twilight reported all that happened to me at the other creatures’ school with the crown. I am aware of all you have gone through…”
Her voice softened and her eyes closed.
“It is why I will grant you free passage back into Canterlot without arrest. But no further than Canterlot for a month. If you prove yourself to be a good citizen then the rest of Equestria will be accessible to you. I want to trust you. Twilight does. And I have faith in her judgment. But I must be cautious for my citizens. What you did was very dangerous. I am sure you understand this now more than anypony though.”
Thinking of Shimmer having to deal with a demon caused a pang in Celestia’s heart. Especially considering her own…situation.
“Now…” she softened. “Are you feeling alright? Did the portal journey leave you dizzy?”
Sunset’s eyes widened as she heard Celestia speak. Did she hear her right? She could stay? Sunset almost jumped for joy at that remark, but her ears still remained flattened as her past transgressions were brought up, which she completely agreed with, giving Celestia a small nod in agreement.
She gently ran her hoof against the ground, unsure of how to answer the question. There were a lot of emotions going through her. Was she feeling alright?
She gently walked to the princess, stopping only for a moment to look up at her, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. Suddenly, as of a dam had burst inside her, she threw herself at Celestia, wrapping her hooves around her as best she could as the tears finally began to fall, heavy sobs leaving her. For weeks, her stress had been backed up inside her, due to Anon-a-Miss, her friends leaving her, the students turning on her, even Principal Celestia threatening to expel her for trying to defend herself. And now…
The last thing she had expected to see was the inside of Celestia’s personal office. Last she remembered, the portal was in at the Crystal Empire. Or was it at Twilight’s castle? She couldn’t really remember at the moment, not with her nerves fired up to 11. Guess Celestia wanted it moved so she could keep an eye on it in case…
She trotted forward and quickly tried to make a run for it, but it had been a while since she had been on four legs. She quickly lost her balance as she tried to run, and stumbled slightly, her front hooves waving wildly in front of her. Before she knew it, she tripped, body flailing all over the place as she let out a cry of panic.
“Sunset,” Celestia took a step forward. Her magic instantly formed a protective barrier on the ground like a pillow to make sure the unicorn would not thrash on it and pushed the mare up to standing position. “Deep breaths.”
She must be re-adapting to being a pony. That had to be frightening. Celestia put a hoof forward and felt Sunset’s forehead as if to check her temperature. Perhaps an old habit. Then she backed away.
“Sunset Shimmer…” her voice grew sterner. “…you’ve returned? For good?”

Sunset reached out a shaking hand towards the portal, but she hesitated and drew her hand back in, her hands clasping against her chest as she took a shuttering breath. She couldn’t do this. She wasn’t ready to face her.
But yet…
Even after all that she had gone through over the holiday season, in light of Anon-a-Miss rearing its ugly head, she had been dreading this moment for longer then she could remember. She had spoken to Princess Twilight about it, and after a lot of convincing (mostly to herself), she had finally agreed that she would go through the portal… and meet with Celestia once again. Her friend. Her mentor.
Her mother.
She let out a soft sniffle, but steeled her resolve and pulled her new jacket in on herself. Well, it wasn’t really that new. She’d had it for awhile, but ever since her old one got ruined in a fistfight, she need something to help keep up appearances. But it wouldn’t matter anyway, she supposed.
Taking one final look at her watch, she realized that the bell would be ringing soon. That meant students coming out and possibly seeing her, and that was the last thing she wanted. So, she sucked in a breath of cold air, stiffened up… and walked right through the portal.
Celestia left the classroom of youthful unicorns who clutched their books and scrolls in their magic and departed her quietly and waited until they were some distance before they started speaking again. It was always like that in the school. Ponies walking on eggshells with her. She stepped into the office where the portal happened to be and looked at the schedule where she kept her notes.
Dead silence except for Philomena’s soft snoring on her little perch. Then something sounded in left of the room. Celestia’s wide wings opened and she turned. That portal was not supposed to work unless–
The alicorn’s eyes went wide and her mouth gaped at the sight of her former student. She said nothing. Her expression remained blank.
Sunset Shimmer had returned.

I don’t know why but I think she’s trying to say that she’s the bad guy. Next thing you will all tell me is that Emperor Awesome is neither an Emperor nor awesome.
